About Let's Talk

Everyone—from parents and public health workers to Fortune 500 CEOs and the US President—wants our nation's children to be safe, healthy and successful in school.

The obstacles to student's success are clear. Substance abuse, violence and injury are the leading causes of youth mortality, disability, hospitalization, and emotional trauma. Young people face daily challenges in the form of bullying, interpersonal violence, drug overdose, and alcohol-related injury.

Let's Talk's mission is to support families, educators, healthcare providers and lawmakers as they work together to create safe and resilient environments in every home, school and community.

Let's Talk provides communities with the tools to achieve two important goals:

  1. Community education that strengthens parent-child communication, and gives every family member the skills to discuss problems related to youth safety and health-and find solutions.
  2. Community mobilizing around youth-focused and evidence-based strategies to prevent youth violence, substance abuse and injury.

About Community Education and the Let's Talk Activities

1aThe Let's Talk activities have been used successfully as part of community education strategies since 1994. Let's Talk activities provide a way for parents and guardians to assess their own children's knowledge, attitudes and behaviors—focusing on young people's experience with bullying, violence, substance abuse and injury. The family-tested activities were the centerpiece of a number of youth development initiatives including: the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Plain Talk for Parents workshop series used in Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, and New Orleans; the CDC-funded and National Education Association sponsored Can We Talk? and ¿Conversamos? parent workshop series promoted in more than 100 cities around the country. In 2000, the Let's Talk activities were published in the Ten Talks Parents Must Have With Their Children book series that found a national audience when Oprah built an entire show around Ten Talks books, catapulting Ten Talks to the New York Times best-selling list.
